Hyperpure is a service of Zomato that delivers fresh and packed food items to restaurants, hotels, and caterers across India. Recently, its warehouse in Hyderabad faced some issues. During a routine inspection, the regulatory officials noticed an error with the dates on several mushroom packets. Specifically, these packets displayed a future date, raising questions about the accuracy of Hyperpure’s packaging. After this incident, CEO of the company came forward to address the issue via press release. He clarified the misunderstanding and emphasised that Zomato will only deliver safe food to its consumers.

What the Inspectors Found?

On October 29, 2024, FSSAI inspectors raided Zomato’s Hyperpure warehouses. They got an A+ in their food safety rating. However, during the inspection, the officials found that 90 packets of mushrooms were labelled with wrong date and barcode. This mistake brought the media’s focus on Hyperpure and the lack of quality assurance they had for their products. Some citizens also expressed their desire to know why the dates were not in order. Customers were curious and wanted to know the whereabouts.

CEO response to Zomato Hyperpure Warehouse Raid

Zomato’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal, quickly addressed the issue to reassure everyone. He posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) and explained how one of Zomato’s vendors had caused the mistake by printing the wrong date on the mushroom packets. Mr. Goyal pointed out that Zomato’s quality-check team had already kept these packets aside for further review, so they were never going to reach customers.

He says, “Hello all – just want to clarify that the fssai team noted that 90 packets of button mushrooms had incorrect packaging date – these were already identified by our warehouse team and were rejected during an inward QC. This is not usual, and was due to a manual typing error on the vendor’s side. Still, the concerned vendor has been delisted from our database. At Hyperpure, we have stringent inward guidelines and tech systems that helped our teams to identify this error in time.”

Goyal also highlighted Hyperpure’s A+ safety rating to demonstrate the company’s commitment to quality and food safety. He also expressed disappointment on how such a minor issue was receiving so much attention. According to Goyal, the mushrooms were worth only around Rs 7,200—a very small amount compared to the large quantity of food Hyperpure handles daily.

Other Findings by Inspectors

During the inspection of the warehouse, a few other issues were also highlighted to FSSAI officials. For example, some of the doors in the warehouses required improved insect barriers. Also, two workers were not in proper working dress at the time of inspection. However, the FSSAI commended Hyperpure for its professionalism in maintaining detailed pest control records and conducting regular health checks on its personnel. The officials also noted that Hyperpure holds all the required legal permits for operations. This indicates that Zomato takes the country’s food hygiene standards seriously.

After this inspection, Zomato acted quickly to work on the shortcomings. The vendor responsible for the date error has been terminated to avoid repeating such mistakes in the future. Zomato has also adopted many strict measures to enhance the quality check and safety measures at Hyperpure.
