Uber Audio Recording Feature

Uber has introduced a new audio recording feature to improve safety during rides. This option allows passengers to record their trips if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable. 

Uber has called it an industry-first step to ensure better accountability and security. The feature is now available for both riders and drivers across India.

The audio recording is encrypted and cannot be accessed by anyone, including riders and drivers. Only Uber’s safety team can review the recordings, and that too, only if a safety report is filed. 

Uber says the feature complies with India’s one-party consent law. It also mentioned that recordings will automatically delete after a set time, ensuring privacy.

This initiative comes alongside another major update aimed at women drivers and passengers. Uber is working to make its rides safer and more inclusive with these features.

Women Rider Preference Adds More Safety Options

Uber has also launched the Women Rider Preference (WRP) feature. This allows female drivers to accept trips only from female passengers. 

The company says this will help women feel safer, especially during late-night rides. It also gives women drivers the chance to work longer hours and boost their earnings.

Uber stated that the WRP feature is already live across all Indian cities. 

Over 21,000 rides have been completed using this option so far. While Uber has not disclosed the total number of women drivers on its platform, it is promoting this feature to support women earners.

To strengthen the initiative, Uber partnered with Bengaluru-based NGO, Durga. The NGO focuses on gender equity and safety. 

Uber will use this partnership to provide virtual training sessions for drivers. These sessions aim to address women riders’ unique safety needs. The company believes this will create a more respectful and safe experience for all users.

Tech Features Add More Safety to Trips

The Uber audio recording feature is part of a broader safety update. The company has added several tools under its “Safety Preferences” section. 

Riders can customize their safety settings for every trip. These include automatic trip-sharing with trusted contacts, enabling RideCheck alerts, and using the audio recording option.

Uber is also testing an SOS feature to directly connect riders to police. This feature is already live in Maharashtra. 

It allows riders to share critical trip details with police in case of emergencies. The company plans to roll out this feature in more cities soon.

Uber India’s Head of Safety Operations, Sooraj Nair, shared that these features are built to give users more confidence while traveling. 

The goal is to provide better protection during rides, especially at night or in high-risk areas.

Setting a New Standard for Ride-Hailing Safety

These features show Uber’s focus on technology-driven safety. The Uber audio recording feature is expected to bring more trust and accountability. 

It also highlights the company’s effort to address safety concerns in India, one of its key markets.

By offering the Women Rider Preference, Uber is also empowering women drivers. This step provides a safe working environment and boosts their financial opportunities. 

With over 21,000 trips completed using the WRP feature, it has already shown positive results.

Uber’s collaboration with NGO Durga further strengthens its commitment to safer rides. 

The company’s plan to expand SOS and other safety features will improve security for millions of users.
