On Thursday, Anupam Mittal, founder of Shaadi.com, drew significant attention with a new Instagram post. He introduced a feature on Shaadi.com called Dowry AI. This AI tool aims to simplify how dowry is calculated.
History of Dowry Culture
Traditionally, dowry involved the bride’s family giving gifts to the groom. It was often based on factors like owning a car or house. Earlier, it was not a part of Indian culture. It was seen as a part of women’s empowerment. It was seen as woman’s contribution to the whole family. Consequently, things changed and this system got exploited.
Mittal noted in his video that the process has become more complex, considering modern factors like investments and personal preferences. To address this, his team created Dowry AI using artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The Dowry AI reel
The video demonstrated how Dowry AI works. Users enter their details, such as age and salary, to see how much “dowry” they are worth. However, Dowry AI is not promoting dowry. Instead, it is an anti-dowry initiative. After showing the dowry amount, the tool redirects users to a serious message. It highlights that nearly 188,000 dowry-related deaths have occurred in India over the last decade. The message urges users to reflect on the value of life over dowry.
This twist in Dowry AI aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of dowry. Mittal’s goal is to help people see the true cost of dowry and to encourage a change in these harmful traditions.
